The first motorcar to usher in the era of the subway in Korea, between Seoul Station ~ Cheongnyangni
(7.8km), on Aug. 15, 1974. At present, 100 cars for 10 motorcar formations, which have exceeded their
lifespan (25 years), have been removed from service and replaced with VVVF new type motorcars. 600,000
resistance control type are in service with modified operations cabs. |

With the deterioration of the resistance and
chopper control type rolling stock, which
was introduced in the 1980s and led the
popularization of the subway for 25 years, a
total of 356 cars for 38 formations were
newly manufactured and introduced to ensure
a safe Line 2, the most congested line, and
to improve customer services. It presents
the standard Korean model, including the
application of an electric gate device and
installation of a cushion chair. |

Asian Games and 88 Seoul Olympics 340 cars for 34
formations were replaced with the latest VVVF motorcar
between 2009~2010. Other old motorcars are expected to
be replaced once their lifespan has been exceeded.

The passenger compartments on the new type
motorcar for Line 3 were manufactured using
environmentally-friendly materials to keep
pace with the green growth era. Various
devices were made compact and light to
reduce the overall weight and the latest
inverter control was introduced. In
comparison with existing motorcars, the new
cars present an environmentally-friendly,
highly efficient and low energy model.
Indeed, this new car has come to be known as
the "Limousine of Happiness" in terms of
passenger service.
