    Introduction to Motorcar by Line

    Motorcars of Seoul Metro Line 1

    The first motorcar to usher in the era of the subway in Korea, between Seoul Station ~ Cheongnyangni (7.8km), on Aug. 15, 1974. At present, 100 cars for 10 motorcar formations, which have exceeded their lifespan (25 years), have been removed from service and replaced with VVVF new type motorcars. 600,000 resistance control type are in service with modified operations cabs.

    • Features
    • Initial phase motorcars generated lots of heat due to resistance and were heavy due to the fact the car body was made from MILD-STEEL. This type of motorcar requires regular painting due to corrosion and will be replaced with new motorcars due to their high energy consumption and short service life.

    Features
    New motorcars designed and manufactured to satisfy the desires of citizens and the requirements of the high-speed train era. Electrical parts utilizing the latest technology were used to reduce power consumption by 20 ~ 30%, resulting in higher operational efficiency. With LED passenger compartment guides, route indicators, high capacity air conditioners and wheelchair space installed- a first for Korea - this epoch-making motor car has drawn much praise from citizens.

    Motorcar of Seoul Metro Line 2

    The national motorcar is the driving force of the Korean subway. Most old type motor cars, which had exceeded their operational lifespan (25 years), began to be removed in 2005 and replaced with new VVVF type motor cars. Some rolling stock is also in service with modified operations cabs.

    Features
    With the deterioration of the resistance and chopper control type rolling stock, which was introduced in the 1980s and led the popularization of the subway for 25 years, a total of 356 cars for 38 formations were newly manufactured and introduced to ensure a safe Line 2, the most congested line, and to improve customer services. It presents the standard Korean model, including the application of an electric gate device and installation of a cushion chair.

    Motorcar of Seoul Metro Line 3

    Motorcars being the driving force for a successful 86 Asian Games and 88 Seoul Olympics 340 cars for 34 formations were replaced with the latest VVVF motorcar between 2009~2010. Other old motorcars are expected to be replaced once their lifespan has been exceeded.

    Features
    The passenger compartments on the new type motorcar for Line 3 were manufactured using environmentally-friendly materials to keep pace with the green growth era. Various devices were made compact and light to reduce the overall weight and the latest inverter control was introduced. In comparison with existing motorcars, the new cars present an environmentally-friendly, highly efficient and low energy model. Indeed, this new car has come to be known as the "Limousine of Happiness" in terms of passenger service.

    Motorcar of Seoul Metro Line 4

    VVVF control motorcar. Currently, 470 cars for 47 formations (26 formations for D.C only/21 formations for DC or AC) have been introduced on Line 4 and are in service.

    • With the application of high-capacity power elements and the refinement of control technology, the high power induction motor can be controlled so that it can be operated in the form of 5 motor cars. 20~30% power is saved, efficiency is enhanced and maintenance made considerably easier. In addition, this motorcar was manufactured to improve customer service in order to satisfy the greater demands of citizens.
