Passengers can listen to FM radio on Subway Lines 2-4
Seoul Metro said that it had completed installation of the FM radio system for Subway Line 2-4 passengers on Jan. 20 and would start a two-month test-operational period. Passengers can now listen to FM radio, which has been unavailable on many sections of Seoul Metro's subway lines. FM radio can also be connected to wireless communications systems, possibly helping enhance the overall underground safety conditions by providing emergency communications lines.
So far, passengers were unable to listen to FM radio on Subway Lines 2-4 because of its outdated equipment, most of which was installed in 1970s and 1980s. Seoul Metro has worked hard to install the FM radio system on the lines but the efforts have been hampered by budget shortages. However, Seoul Metro started to build the system last March as new technologies and innovative construction methods helped reduce the overall installation costs by more than 60 percent. Seoul Metro initially expected the system would cost about 7.8 billion won.
"We are happy to provide the FM radio service to our passengers just as the popularity of radio programs is growing again," a Seoul Metro official said. "Passengers will also be able to use DMB, Digital View, WiBro and other IT and communications services on the move."
